The intent here is for the building to showcase the SIO’s mission statement of tranquillity, stability and quality through design. The values of quality, stability, confidence, accountability, creativity and integration are brought in through the planning, building typology and the façade design. The building is designed with simplicity and transparency at all levels and especially at the ground, creating a humble and grounded presence. The idea of “belonging to the sea” and connection between the ground, waves and horizon are converted abstractly into the building design. The lower floors have folded louvers representing the sea waves that abstract to vertical louvers with diminishing frequency as it goes up the floors. The Islamic geometric pattern has been synonymous with the scientific and mathematic advancement and as a representation of the supreme power of existence. The abstract patterns of juxtaposition of various geometries create beautiful patterns that are mesmerizing.
The architecture strives to create a meaningful, layered and coherent contemporary interpretation of the Bahrain architecture that appears to “belong”. The attempt is to bring an architecture that is looking towards the future but most importantly connects to the Bahraini people, through symbolic representation, material choices and scale. The other important aspect is the use of the spaces, how the design opens up and becomes permeable at the ground level, allowing access to the community and connecting to the waterfront and the essence of “belonging to the sea” is captured through the sea view promenade. The promenade is designed as an urban plaza that connects to the existing route along the waterway. It expands at the location of the site and become a celebrated termination of the route with places to stop, reflect and play. With retail and food plaza as functions, the design offers a variety of retail and dining experiences that connect with the ground and also with the view of the waterfront.
